FILLING PIECES SS17: LET US CREATE
Filling Pieces S/S17 Collection is entitled ‘LET US CREATE’, a clarion call to the world inspiring people to proudly showcase their creativity. Our own creativity has been reinvigorated by the new found capacity to design and produce our own custom sole units. Our design process has been transformed, where once we limited to designing uppers to fit generic soles, now our output is only limited by our imaginations.
Madagascar – the location of our shoot – is the embodiment of nature’s creativity as a biodiversity hotspot where 90% of the wildlife found there is found nowhere else on Earth. When the island split from the Indian peninsular 88 million years ago, the flora and fauna there were allowed to evolve there in relative isolation. The sheer diversity of life and landscapes on Earth is evidence of the relentless creativity of nature, and for a brand that draws so much inspiration from the natural world, there could be no better backdrop for our most creative collection to date.
In the Ankarana Special Reserve, we found a plateau of 150-million-year-old Jurassic limestone that had been eroded into caves and underground rivers by rainfall. The area remained protected from human intrusion thanks to the rugged terrain and dense vegetation, a constant reminder of nature’s dominance over man. In the alien-like rock formations of Tsingy Rouge we find a landscape shaped by the actions of man and nature together. Sharp projections of rock that conjure images of distant planets were formed here from rusty-red laterite, after mankind burnt the vegetation in the area. Without their roots holding together the soil, when the area flooded the soil would become loose and would gather in certain areas. After many years, the formations we see are the end result. In these two locations we see Filling Pieces two biggest influences, the actions of mankind and the actions of nature, expressed in one beautiful location.
