VOLCOM: NO VACANCY AW17 CAPSULE COLLECTION
Last minute plans are often the best laid. Last Minute plans are often the easiest led awry.Enter a psychedelic laced trip to Joshua Tree National Park.
Joshua Tree. Where two deserts meet. Dark night skies. The Smell of sagebush and wetted dust. Sparsely populated, just your mind left to wander its own journey through the sparse, spiky Joshua trees.
Leaving the smudged city lights in the rear view mirror behind you, you drive. Lights become fewer and fewer. Cars are becoming less and less frequent.
Eyes straining; only registering the lights as they pass. White. Red. White. Red. Nothing. Darkness. Mind wandering. Dust flicking up the rear. Clad to the car. The speedo becomes less and less relevant. A yellow blur below the windscreen. The destination is as vague as the journey. Pause. Stop. Silence punctuated only by the sound of crickets and a ticking engine. The air heavy with the smell of wet dust. There is no sign of rain. The mind wanders. The mind plays tricks. The more you think. The deeper into the vortex you go….
The light of the Motel draws nearer as you walk on dust. The sound of crickets intensifies. It’s dingy. Two stories. One day it might have been white but now it is most certainly yellow. The electric sign flitters in the darkness. Bulbs blown. Maybe last week. Maybe last year. The light flickers on the fly screen of the door. Or does it. You lean closer to see the sign displayed in the door. It’s yellow, cracked and rusted. But the faded red letters need no explanation.
This collection is a reference to the 70’s psychedelic vibes that are apparent in the graphic driven prints of psychedelic inspired artwork and details. The ‘Souvenir Jacket’ is a modern twist of the jacket worn by the soldiers on return from Vietnam. A key piece for the called is called the Berkeley, a nod to the anti war manifestations from the hippy movement of the 60’s.
