BERTA CABESTANY SS18
Berta Cabestany is the Barcelona based fashion label blending traditional Catalan craftsmanship and heritage with the fresh and optimistic spirit of the millennial generation. By introducing innovative and unexpected materials into her design process Berta is showing that embellishment and embroidery can work for everyday and everyone.
For SS18 Berta Cabestany takes inspiration from director Jean-Luc Goddard’s iconic ‘Pierrot le Fou’, using leading lady Anna Karina as her muse. The juxtaposition of the film’s macabre themes and optimistic colour palette as well as Karina’s playful femininity can all be seen in the collection. From the light-hearted Flowerbomb Bags to the bright yellow Polen Top , SS18 is full of innovative silhouettes and bold colours.
Colour plays a pivotal role for Berta Cabestany with the hero shades for this collection being a bright sunflower yellow, sky blue and deep crimson red. All of this framed by delicate white pieces that act as a canvas on which the sanguine colours can pop. The printed Dan Dress and Prubi Skirt blend the key colours of this collection in a subtle floral print.
This collection also plays with femininity with its reimagining of classic silhouettes and styles, the oversized tulle Ballet Skirt with its delicate fabric contrasted by the strong lines of the skirt itself is a stand-out piece from this season. The Tulipo Dress is another signature piece with its pleated babydoll silhouette and radiant yellow tulle.
SS18 also sees Berta Cabestany play with both traditional and novel fabrics, combining crepe, organza and chiffon with neoprene and plastic to create a vibrant and modern aesthetic. The Neo Dress blends crimson neoprene and crepe to create a feminine but firm silhouette that reflects the playful strength of this season’s girl. Meanwhile the Lermo Blue Dress enhances the simple silhouette of the dress with oversized PVC pockets, each hand embroidered with playful figures.
Hand embroidered pieces such as the Pivici Raincoat stand-out in the collection, made from translucent PVC it is adorned with intricate embroidery that adds femininity to the edgy design. This traditional technique is done by Cabestany herself and can been seen across the collection. The illustration technique used is called ‘blind drawing’ and involves the designs being drawn without looking at the paper such as on the Bous Blouse and Lermo Dress, this results in the unique and whimsical patterns that are signature of the brand.
Embellishment also plays a key role, using repurposed plastic and camera materials to create elegant abstract floral designs to enhance the SS18 collection. The deep crimson Superbou Jacket stands out with its tied sleeves and boxy silhouette contrasted by the hyper-feminine plastic embellishments that cover the back of the jacket itself.
Finally Berta Cabestany rounds out the collection with a series of gold plated accessories. The matching Flaua Necklace and Flaua Ring bring a more delicate femininity to this season, while the Parrot Earrings and Lion Diente Necklace add a bolder and more playful aesthetic.
