DEBORAH LYONS SS19
Deborah lyons, unique design aesthetic centred on iconic tailoring with a twist, showcases the london-based brand’s day-to-night approach for city dressing. by introducing a range of innovative textiles and unusual silhouettes, deborah lyons presents a collection that playfully intertwines futuristic design elements with the brand’s classic feminine style.
Drawing upon Americana heritage from the vast mysterious West, Deborah Lyons offers an outsider’s perspective on the American dream. Inviting one on a visit to an imaginary American high school in 1990s California, the influence of the era is displayed as a school uniform.
Reminiscent of Lyons’ love of thrift store shopping, a throwback from her years living in New York, fabrications this season include a flora print sourced in Japan; a rich indigo denim and vintage-inspired printed silks. Deborah Lyons continues to use high quality fabrics from the finest British and Italian mills, capturing centuries old craftsmanship within the collection.
Deborah Lyons plays with prints, accentuating the femininity of a bold flower ruffle-shoulder top with matching ‘Coco’ wide leg trousers to a vibrant red Japanese flora ‘Dionne’ dress and ‘Farrah’ jumpsuit. The Japanese flora print can also be seen in the ‘Sloane’ dress as well in a softer, nude tone with gentle violet, red or yellow hues.
A modern 3D printed fabric resembling a black rubber surface is seen on the ‘Corey’ top with matching ‘Courtney’ trousers, whilst the angular use of sequins on the ‘Cher’ dress gives a geometric optical illusion. This futuristic detailing contrasts with delicate laser cut floral appliqué on the ‘Romi’ bomber jacket – evocative of days on the playing fields – as well as on the voluminous Tai dress with denim underlay, which becomes the collection’s closing look or prom dress.
Frequent sporting references within the collection transport one to the school gym, leading Lyons to shoot the Spring-Summer 19 collection campaign at her British alma mater. Flirty pleated tennis skirts, trousers with racer stripes and slogan t-shirts add to the 90s nostalgia.
Spring-Summer 19 becomes the wardrobe of 90s cinema, romantic and sentimental allowing one to reflect on a simpler, more innocent time in the recent past. Looking back to high school, the collection offers a retrospective on a time one holds dear.
