WAN HUNG AW16 COLLECTION: TRANSFORM

This Autumn / Winter 16, Wan Hung Cheung returns to London Collections: Men for a second season to showcase his latest Wan Hung line. The new collection focuses on a futuristic yet pure aesthetic with clean cut tailoring interspersed with bold jersey separates that offer a play on proportions.

Taking inspiration from David Nolan’s Interstellar, the Transformer film series and German contemporary artist, Josephine Meckseper, the designer takes key silhouettes and updates them by adding contrasting graphic inserts, altered seams and intricate, textural detailing on hems, cuffs and pockets.

“This season, I wanted the collection to demonstrate the idea of breaking free from rules in life and to act as a shield to preserve the purity and irreverence found in childhood.”

With this in mind, Wan draws on a garment’s transformative abilities with pieces seeming at first classic yet ultimately modern and multi-functional; clean cut bombers, tailored shirts and long line coats are adorned with three dimensional, hand woven cube appliqué while tapered and cropped trousers feature altered seams to add a further dimension. Tailored vests and cropped or hooded jackets feature a reflective, off-kilter paint streak print pin-stripe that further enhances the line’s futuristic qualities.

Using Italian wool, cashmere, mohair and pure cotton jersey, Wan has constructed a number of tailored silhouettes alongside more relaxed looks. Key pieces include a three-dimensional hem Crombie style coat, cropped trouser suits, slim-cut shorts and bold, contrast colour track pants. Knitwear takes the form of oversize mohair mixed with cashmere roll neck sweaters in vivid block hues or graphic stripes while sweatshirts feature textural epaulettes and striking elbow detail.

This season, the colour palette draws on the bold shades featured in the contemporary art and film that have inspired the collection: shades of primary red, brick, cerulean and slate sit alongside ink, dove grey and hints of black and white.

Accompanying the collection are a number of accessories including an oversize hand-woven scarf and Swarovski embellished belts, neck collars and wrist cuffs.
