CMMN SWDN SPRING/SUMMER 2017 PRESENTATION
MARKET RODEO
After a recent trip to Morocco, Saif Bakir and Emma Hedlund looked to Marrakech’s vibrant and colourful street markets for SS17 inspiration. “We really liked the stuffy warm air that smelled of exotic spices, and the chaotic mixture of colours, texture and materials,” they explain. “It truly is a place where east meets west.” Roaming camels and the tumultuous market squares reminded Bakir and Hedlund of Western rodeo riders, hence the collection title.
The energy and attitude they experienced in Marrakech, juxtaposed with the desolate serenity of the North African desert, helped shape the collection. Bakir and Hedlund use dry cottons and distressed denim, inspired by the crackled sand in the desert, mixed with typical spring fabrics, like loosely woven linen and Moroccan striped poplin. Light cashmere adds a refined touch.
Much like Morocco, the collection is a mish-mash of stripes and checks in contrasting colours, focusing on shads of ochre, ash grey and nude tones mixed with hues of blue, burnt yellow and a dusty pink. ‘Market Rodeo’ is defined by key pieces such as a cashmere-panelled stripy jacket with fringing on the hem, a robe-like full-length and loosely woven check coat, and high-waisted pleated trousers.
The expanded accessory collection includes elongated leather belts with whipstitch detailing, matching fanny packs and a “Western Moroccan” shoe. The artisan slip-on boot in tanned and black leather with elastic detailing takes inspiration from both desert sandals and heeled rodeo boots.
