WRANGLER DROPS RETRO GLORY
Wrangler’s new Retro Glory collection for Fall Preview 2017 is the first of several special launches for 2017, marking Wrangler’s 70th birthday. The Retro Glory collection rides the wave of interest in all things 1970s – a decade where Wrangler became known as the denim icon it still is today.
Celebrating an era of sunny positivity in youth culture, the standalone collection for men and women – complete with dedicated branding and labelling – focuses on four distinct elements: period-correct saturated deep blue denim, Wrangler’s Stone Dyed (heavy stone wash) denim, a bold palette of brights and the rainbow motif popular in the era, here revived from Wrangler’s archive.
For women the collection includes rainbow graphic t-shirts, retro striped cropped flares and festival favourites the likes of pin-up shorts and cut off skirts as well as cropped straight jeans in rainbow colours. For men Retro Glory includes rainbow graphic Ts and sweats, western shirts, slim tapered fit jeans in rainbow brights and a rigid denim Stone Dyed jean with rips and repairs.
Both women’s and men’s collections feature plenty of 70s detailing such as patching, ripping, embellishment and embroidery, notably on a limited-edition oversized trucker jacket in Stone Dyed denim with full back panel embroidery by artist Luke McLean. This artist collaboration also resulted in 3 graphic tees.
“The 1970s were at times years of great optimism of fun, which the rainbow graphic suggested,” says Wrangler’s creative director Sean Gormley. “It’s a look and feel being revisited by pop culture now, from fashion to festival style to hit TV series ‘Stranger Things’. Since the 70s and Wrangler go hand in hand, there’s a natural authenticity in it revisiting this upbeat look.”
